-
- Actually, you're both right. The Amiga's architecture and philosophy is vastly to
- superior to a PC's, especially with respect to multimedia and I/O. The custom chips,
- when they were first introduced, were WAY ahead of anything the PC had to offer. The
- PC platform did and does require the CPU to do just about everything.
-
- Unfortunately, there was a drawback to putting the custom chips and such on the
- motherboard, and not allowing clones and compatibles: The technology stagnated. Of
- course Commodore's dreadful mismanagement didn't help matters any. Even though the
- PC's architecture is incredibly primitive, the components, primarily the graphics card
- and the CPU are extremely fast and extremely cheap. There's nothing to say that the
- Amiga isn't capable of doing graphics as well as a top of the line graphics card
- equipped PC (Ok, the lack of local bus is a hefty disadvantage, but Zorro III isn't bad
- compared to something like ISA), but there's not much market or competition to drive
- prices down. This is why a CyberVision costs $400-$500 while a Diamond Stealth VRAM is
- more like $200.

-
- Decades behind might be a bit strong, but it's true the Amiga's archicecture is FAR
- better than the ISA bus / no-autoconfig / IRQ conflicts / rigid port assignments / etc
- / etc, need I go on... architecture of the PC's. Regardless of how blazing fast a
- CPU and graphics card they put in the things, they're still lousy designs, and it shows
- in everything except raw speed.
